Sue A. Meier, MA, MPA, LMFT
Sue A. Meier, MA, MPA, LMFT, Executive Director and Founder of the International Child Advocacy Network, Inc. (Yes ICAN). She is a nationally recognized professional with nearly 30 years of experience in both the child abuse, domestic violence and crisis/information-referral hotline fields.
She holds two Master's degrees, graduating with distinction in both. The first is in Educational Psychology, Counseling and Guidance in 1986 and the other is in Public Administration in 2001. She also is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California. She has a strong combination of management and clinical skills. Ms. Meier has created and implemented both clinical programs and crisis hotlines. She has also been involved with the enhancement of technical capabilities for several national and local hotlines including additions, changes, and upgrades to the telephone and computer systems. In addition, she has implemented training programs for crisis specialists and mandated child abuse reporters.
Ms. Meier served as the director of a national child abuse hotline and created and ran an adult survivor of child abuse program. In 1996, she founded the International Child Abuse Network, (Now the International Child Advocacy Network), Yes ICAN, and is the Executive Director of this organization. This volunteer organization provides information and resources as well as facilitated support chat groups to individuals throughout the world who have concerns around child abuse and domestic violence. Yes ICAN has been awarded Best Prevention Program by the Women's World Summit Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland and was awarded the 2008 Fernando Award for being one of the top fifty non-profit organizations in the San Fernando Valley.
Ms. Meier has spoken to a variety of organizations both locally, nationally and internationally about child abuse, parenting, adult survivors, domestic violence and grief. She has testified before the County Board of Supervisors, the Commission on Children and Families First and has been invited to speak before the United States Senate subcommittee on Health and Human Services. She also participated in the United Nations General Assembly's Special Session on Children.
Ms. Meier has been awarded the National Distinguished Service Registry for Counseling and Development in 1986, was awarded the 2003 Outstanding Volunteer Award from the San Fernando Valley Child Abuse Council and was a member of the 2004 edition of Who's Who in America and 2005 edition of Who's Who in the World. She has been a board member of the international organization, Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS) where she chaired both the ethics and accreditation committees and is the Past Board President of the San Fernando Valley Child Abuse Council. Ms. Meier is also a professor of psychology, development, critical thinking, child advocacy/social policy and parenting. In this capacity she has been awarded the Golden Apple award several times for her achievement in teaching.
The area that Ms Meier is most proud of is her four sons, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren and two great-grandchild. They bring joy to her heart and immeasurable pride and support.
